IT IS A VERY INTERESTING FACT THAT "ICHIMONJI", THE MOST FAMOUS SCHOOL OF SWORD MAKING DURING THE KAMAKURA PERIOD (70 % OF TODAY'S NATIONAL TREASURE SWORDS, ARE FROM THE KAMAKURA PERIOD), ACTUALLY HAD ITS "GRASS ROOTS BEGINNINGS AT SEA", OFF THE COAST OF "CHIKUZEN" PROVINCE! HAD THERE NEVER BEEN A BATTLE OF "DEN-NO-URA" IT IS ALMOST CERTAIN THAT THE "ICHIMONJI SCHOOL" WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN BORN! THE MAJORITY OF "ICHIMONJI" MAKERS WERE FROM BIZEN.

MOTOSHIGE WAS TRULY A MAKER OF DISTINGUISHED HERITAGE. HIS LINEAGE CAN BE TRACED TO TWO ( BIZEN & SHOSHU ) OF THE MOST FAMOUS, AND POPULAR SCHOOLS OF SWORD MAKING. HIS GRANDFATHER, WAS THE FAMOUS "MORIIYE" OF BIZEN ( A NATIONAL TREASURE CLASS MAKER ). HIS SENSEI ( TEACHER ), WAS THE EXCEPTIONALLY FAMOUS "SADAMUNE", THE SON OF SHOSHU MASAMUNE, SAID TO BE THE GREATEST OF ALL MASTERS.

"MURAMASA" LIVED DURING THE BUN-GI (1501 AD.) ERA, IN "ISE" PROVINCE. THE SUPERSTITION SURROUNDING HIS BLADES, FIRST EMERGED IN 1603, WHEN "TOKUGAWA IEYASU" WAS EMPOWERED AS THE FIRST "SHOGUN" OF JAPAN! IEYASU, HARBORED STRONG, AND JUSTIFIED SUPERSTITIONS REGARDING "MURAMASA" BLADES. THESE WERE A DIRECT RESULT OF NUMEROUS TRAUMATIC AND VIOLENT INCIDENTS THAT TOOK PLACE IN HIS LIFE. BOTH HIS FATHER AND HIS GRANDFATHER WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED BY "MURAMASA" BLADES, AS WERE NUMEROUS OTHER FRIENDS AND RELATIVES, SOME OF WHOM WERE KILLED. THE BREAKING LEVEL OF HIS TOLERANCE WAS REACHED, WHEN HE WAS PERSONALLY, BADLY CUT BY A "MURAMASA" BLADE. THIS CONVINCED HIM THAT THE BLADES OF "MURAMASA" WERE CURSED, AGAINST THE ENTIRE "TOKUGAWA FAMILY".  IEYASU ISSUED AN EDICT FORBIDDING SAMURAI FROM CARRYING, AND OWNING MURAMASA BLADES. TO VIOLATE THIS EDICT MADE ONE ELIGIBLE FOR CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. THE NORMAL FORM OF EXECUTION WAS CRUCIFIXION.
"YOSHIKAGE", IS ONE OF THE MOST HIGHLY RESPECTED MAKERS OF THE "LATE KAMAKURA" ~ "NAMBOKUCHO" PERIOD'S. HIS FIRST WORKS APPEARED IN ABOUT "KEM-MU" 1334 AD. HE BEGAN HIS STUDIES WITH "CHIKAKAGE", AND IS BELIEVED TO BE HIS SON. HE IS ALSO SAID ( THE ANCIENT RECORDS ARE NOT CLEAR ) TO BE THE SON OF "KAGEMITSU" ( WHO IS THE FATHER OF "KANEMITSU" ), ONE OF THE "TOP FIVE" MAKERS OF HIS ERA. "CHIKAKAGE" "KA-REKI 1326" PERIOD, ONE OF THE FOREMOST LATE KAMAKURA MAKERS, AND STUDENT OF THE EXCEPTIONALLY FAMOUS "NAGAMITSU".

Sukenao produced blades both in his hometown, Takagi-mura, and in

Osaka. After Tsuda Sukehiro died in March of the second year of Tenna,

Sukenao settled in Osaka. It is written in the Nambazuru published in

the seventh year of Enpo (1679) that he resided in Yariya-cho in Osaka.

Geographically, Omi is not so far from Osaka, and it is certain that

there are two sources of his blades, those done in Osaka and others done

in Omi. For instance, those which are inscribed" Sesshu ni oite kore o

tsukuru" have the dates of September of the third year of Enpo (1675)

and of February of the seventh year of Enpo (1679). Although it is very

hard to distinguish between them, there is a tendency that the character

"Ju" is commonly found in the works produced in Omi, as inscribed

"Omi-no-kami Takagi Ju Sukenao."
